How to Nominate:

 

Tacoma implemented a Heritage Tree program in 2023 to inspire awareness, appreciation, and recognition of the city’s oldest trees. A tree qualifies due to its size, age, historical significance, rarity or ecological value. Heritage Trees on public property, such as in the Right of Way or planting strip, are protected (unless they are deemed hazardous) from removal while a Heritage Tree on private property is not protected.
 

The property owner or consent of the property owner nominates a tree on private property. If you know of a tree on private property that could be considered a Heritage Tree, click here or visit the Urban Forestry Dept web page for details on how to apply.  If you have issues filling out the form, you can also email: Ryan Hebert: rhebert@tacoma.gov.

Know of a Tree that might be at risk of removal in the Right of Way? Here's what to do:

 

If a tree service is preparing to remove a tree in the Right of Way or planting strip, notice of permit should have been posted 14 days prior to the tree removal. If no notice was posted, or you are not sure, ask the tree service if they have a permit. If the tree service doesn’t have a permit, call 311. Advise them of the address and issue. Let the Urban Forestry Department know you support protections for Heritage Trees on private property.  Here is a list of meetings you can speak at.  Trees in the planting strip are protected Trees located on the planting strip or Right of Way are protected. In 2023 Tacoma passed local ordinance 9.2.220 which requires a permit for street tree removal.
